React Native is one of the most popular mobile app frameworks out there, and for good reason. Ease of use, a modular nature, and a single code base are a blessing for mobile app developers.

With React Native, your team no longer has to build a separate app for both iOS and Android. React Native made the process easier, but that doesn't mean it's simple. That's where React Native app templates come in.

The Best React Native App Templates on Code Canyon

Before frameworks such as React Native, it was necessary to build your mobile app separately for each type of device you wanted it to run on. You'd have to build the app for iOS, then again for Android, then again for any other operating systems. And each of these platform-specific apps would be coded in a different language with different APIs.

With React Native, on the other hand, a single code base makes it possible to build your app once and deploy it everywhere. On top of this, the app is coded entirely in JavaScript so that it is easier for developers to learn React Native using a language that they already know. Otherwise, you'll need a team with members experienced in half a dozen languages (or sometimes more!).

When using an app template for the React Native framework, you multiply those benefits even more. Your team begins their project with a solid code base, documentation, and set of screens that can cut down on production costs immensely.

CodeCanyon offers a selection of the best React Native app templates on the internet, with nearly 200 currently available. How to Get Started With an Android App Template

tag:code.tutsplus.com,2005:PostPresenter/cms-27499

Creating an attractive user interface for Android apps is almost always a time-consuming task. It takes days, sometimes weeks, to conceptualize and design pixel-perfect layouts that look good on all screen sizes and pixel densities. Furthermore, with most users today expecting their apps to adhere to the guidelines of Material Design, the task has arguably become even harder. Fortunately, there's an easy solution: CodeCanyon, a marketplace that has hundreds of native Android app templates you can use to jump-start your next project. You can save days, even months, of effort by using one of them.

CodeCanyon mobile Android app template bestsellers

In this tutorial, I'll show you how easy it is to download and use an app template from CodeCanyon. We'll be working with a very popular template called Material Design UI Android Template App, which offers five different themes, over 80 ready-to-use screens, and hundreds of beautiful UI components.

Prerequisites

To be able to follow this tutorial, you'll need:

  • the latest version of Android Studio
  • an Android device or emulator that runs Android 4.4 or higher
  • an Envato account

1. Getting the Template

With over 3000 sales, Material Design UI Android Template App is one of the most popular Android app templates available on CodeCanyon. To get it, sign in to CodeCanyon using your Envato account and purchase a license for it.

Template on CodeCanyon

You can now download the template as a ZIP file named codecanyon-tLViUw3g-material-design-ui-android-template-app.zip. In addition to the source code, the file contains all the documentation you'll need to make the most of the template.

2. Building the Template

To start using the template, extract the ZIP file and open the Source code/android-AS directory using Android Studio. The IDE will then load the template and automatically download all its dependencies. Once that's done, you can press Shift + F10 to build and run the project.

If you're running Android Studio 3.5 or higher, the build should complete without any errors and you should be able to see this screen on your device:

Home page of the template

Congratulations! In just a few minutes, you managed to build and run your first native Android app template.

3. Exploring the Template

Like most app templates on CodeCanyon, Material Design UI Android Template App has a large variety of features. It has several activities and fragments you can use to quickly add beautiful screens to your apps, such as login screens or splash screens. For example, you can use the LogInPageActivity class to create different types of login screens.

Login screen samples

If you want to add tabs to your app, instead of starting from scratch, you could try using one of the tab-oriented activities the template has, such as TabMediaActivity or TabShopActivity. Here are two sample tab interfaces:

Lists are an integral part of most Android apps, but creating them is hard. It involves designing layouts for list items and creating appropriate adapters that work efficiently. While using this template though, you have access to several list item layouts and adapters. In fact, you'll notice that the template has a directory called adapter, which contains nothing but different types of adapters.

To find the list item layouts, go to the res/layout directory and look for files whose names start with "list_item". For example, here's what the list_item_expandable_travel.xml and list_item_expandable_social.xml layouts look like:

List view samples

If you prefer having cards as list items, consider using the list_item_google_cards.xml layout. But if that's too generic for your liking, you can try using layouts such as list_item_google_cards_media.xml and list_item_google_cards_travel.xml, which are ideal for media player apps and travel-related apps. Here are some sample card layouts:

Card samples

It's worth noting that the lists you create with this template can support expandable list items, drag and drop, and the swipe-to-dismiss gesture right out of the box.

Navigation drawers are a common feature in apps that follow Material Design guidelines. Because this template focuses on Material Design, you'll find several implementations of navigation drawers in it. The LeftMenusActivity class has everything you'll need to create your drawer. You're, however, free to use one of the more domain-specific activities, such as LeftMenusMediaActivity or LeftMenusSocialActivity, if you think they're better suited for your app.

Navigation drawer samples

The default alert dialog you can create with the Android SDK is generally considered too simple to be a part of a well-polished Android app. And styling it such that it matches your app's overall look and feel is rather hard. That's why this template includes several custom dialogs, whose fonts, colors, and layouts can closely match those of your apps.

You can use the DialogUniversalInfoUtils class to create information dialogs that can easily fit into any type of app. Similarly, you can use the DialogUniversalWarningUtils class to create warning dialogs. For domain-specific dialogs, you should try experimenting with classes such as DialogSocialUtils and DialogTravelUtils.

Sample dialog boxes

In addition to full-fledged activities and layouts, the template has custom styles for common components such as buttons, progress bars, and input fields. You can use them to effortlessly make your user interfaces look more polished. For example, here are some sample checkboxes and text views:

4. Configuring the Template

The Material Design UI Android Template App supports push notifications with Firebase. In other words, you can use the Firebase Cloud Messaging service to send messages to the apps you create with this template. To enable this feature, all you need to do is generate a google-services.json file on the Firebase console and place it in the UIAppTemplate directory. To add any customizations, you'll have to modify the MyFirebaseMessagingService class.

Material Design has its own color system, and it's important that your app's color palette be based on it. The design language also expects your app to have primary, secondary, and accent colors. This template is aware of both requirements and makes its extremely easy for you to apply Material Design colors to your apps. In the res/values/colors_material.xml file, you can find the hex values of all common Material colors, such as Material Purple, Material Pink, and Material Deep Orange.

By modifying the res/values/styles.xml file, you can easily change the colors of the template. For example, by changing the colorPrimary item, you can change the primary color.

Conclusion

In this tutorial, I showed you how to download the Material Design UI Android Template App from CodeCanyon, work with it using Android Studio, and customize it to match your preferences. With the skills you learned today, you can build your next app by simply picking the required layouts and components from the template and associating your data, assets, and business logic with them.

To learn more about the template, do refer to the comprehensive documentation that's available in its docs directory.

Social media logins, for example, are a non-negotiable feature for any app. They save users the trouble of having to create yet another profile. And in the case of restaurant apps, users expect detailed restaurant information and photos. In addition, they also look for:

Custom Search—Options to search for a restaurant by name, cuisine, location, and so on are non-negotiable.

Order History—Convenience means users just click on previous orders and order the same thing again.

Geolocation—So that the app can know the exact location of the customer and show them what restaurants are nearby and how long it takes to get there.

Delivery Tracking—Provides navigation for delivery people to know where they are going and for users to see the progress of their order.

SMS Notification—Notifies users their orders have been received and when their orders are out for delivery.

Payment Gateways—Most people find paying by credit card the most convenient way to pay for their orders.

Ratings and Reviews—Users will want to read what others say about a restaurant before trying it themselves.

Things to Consider Before Building Your Restaurant App

1. Local Needs

The best place to start is in your neighborhood. Understand the needs of local restaurants and how your app can contribute to solving them. This means approaching restaurant owners and speaking with them. It also means speaking with customers to understand their needs.

2. Test Locally

Use local restaurants as test cases for your app. It's the best way to learn which features work for them and which don't. That way, you implement feedback as you build the app. Don't forget to try it out on customers.

3. Learn From Established Competitors

Understand what makes them successful. Study their app interfaces and understand how they engage with users, what makes users stick with them, how they market themselves, and what incentives and rewards they offer.

My First App: How to Create Your First Android App Step-by-Step

To create a native Android app, one that can directly use all the features and functionality available on an Android phone or tablet, you need to use the Android platform's Java API framework. This is the API that allows you to perform common tasks such as drawing text, shapes, and colors on the screen, playing sounds or videos, and interacting with a device's hardware sensors. Over the years, the Android API framework has evolved to become more stable, intuitive, and concise. As a result, being an Android developer today is easier than ever. Even more so if you use Android Studio, the official tool for working with the framework.

In this tutorial, I'll show you how to create your first Android app. While doing so, I'll also introduce you to important Android-specific concepts such views, layouts, and activities.

We'll be starting from scratch to create a very simple app in this tutorial. If you prefer writing less code or need to develop your app as quickly as possible, however, consider using one of the native Android app templates available on CodeCanyon.

CodeCanyon mobile Android app template bestsellers

Using an app template, you can have a polished, ready-to-publish app in just a matter of hours. You can learn how to use an Android app template by referring to the following tutorial:

Prerequisites

To be able to following along, you'll need:

  • the latest version of Android Studio
  • a device or emulator running Android Marshmallow or higher

If you don't have Android Studio, do refer to the following tutorial to learn how to install and configure it:

1. Create a New Project

You'll need an Android Studio project to design, develop, and build your app. So launch Android Studio and click on the Start a new Android Studio project button.

In the next screen, choose Add No Activity because we don't want to use any of the templates offered by Android Studio. Then press Next to proceed.

Template selection screen

You'll now see a form where you can enter important details about your app, such as its name and package name. The name is, of course, the name your users will see on their phones when they install your app.

The package name, on the other hand, is a unique identifier for your app on Google Play. You must follow the Java package naming conventions while specifying it. For example, if your app's name is MyFirstApp and you work for an organization whose website address is example.com, the package name would ideally be "com.example.myfirstapp".

Next, you must decide the programming language you want to use while coding the app. For now, select Java and press Finish

Configure your project screen

Android Studio will now take a minute or two to generate and configure the project.

2. Create an Activity

An activity is one of the most important components of an Android app. It is what allows you to create and display a user interface to your users. An app can have one or more activities, each allowing the user to perform some action. For example, an email client app can have three activities: one for the user to sign up, one to sign in, and one to compose an email.

To keep this tutorial simple, we'll be creating an app with just one activity. To create the activity, in the Project panel of Android Studio, right click on app and select New > Activity > Empty Activity.

In the dialog that pops up, type in MainActivity as the name of the activity, check the Launcher Activity option, and press Finish.

Checking the Launcher Activity option is important because it is what allows your users to open the activity using an Android launcher. As such, a launcher activity serves as an entry point to your app.

Activity creation dialog

3. Create a Layout

Each activity usually has at least one layout associated with it. When you created your activity in the previous step, you also generated an empty layout for it. To take a look at it, open the activity_main.xml file.

An activity's layout primarily consists of views and view groups. A view, sometimes referred to as a widget, is an individual component of your user interface. Buttons, text fields, labels, and progress bars are common examples of views. A view group is a component that can serve as a container for views. Usually, view groups also help you position and set the dimensions of your views.

ConstraintLayout is one of the most powerful and flexible view groups available today. By default, it is the root node of your activity's layout XML file. It looks like this:

We'll be creating a simple clock app in this tutorial. In addition to the local time, it will be able to show the current time in two different countries: India and Germany.

To allow the user to choose the country they're interested in, our layout shall have two Button views, one for Germany, and one for India. And to actually show the time, our layout shall have a TextClock view.

Accordingly, add the following code inside the ConstraintLayout:

Note that each view must have the layout_width and layout_height properties. They decide how large the view is. Other properties such as layout_constraintBottom_toBottomOf and layout_constraintLeft_toLeftOf are necessary to position the view. With the above code, the TextClock view will be placed at the center of the screen, and both the Button views towards the bottom of the screen.

By default, the TextClock view only shows the hours and minutes. The format12Hour property, however, allows you to change that. In the above code, its value is set to h:mm:ss a. This tells the TextClock view that it should display the hours, minutes, seconds, and also an AM/PM suffix.

Also note that each Button view has an onClick property. This property is used to assign click event handlers to the buttons.

The handlers don't exist yet, but you can ask Android Studio to generate them for you. To do so, hover over the name of the handler until you see a red light bulb appear beside it. Then click on the light bulb and select the second option, the one with the yellow light bulb.

Create onClick handlers with Android Studio

At this point, you can try pressing Shift-F10 to run the app. If there are no errors in your XML code, you should see something like this on your phone or emulator:

App running showing local time

Although the buttons don't work yet, the TextClock view should show the local time, updating itself every second.

4. Implement Event Handlers

When you generated event handlers for the two buttons, Android Studio added two methods to your activity's Java file, MainActivity.java. If you open it, you should find the following code in it:

Inside the event handlers, all we need to do is change the time zone of the TextClock view. But how do you reference a view that's in your layout XML file from inside your Java file? Well, you just use the findViewById() method.

Once you have a reference to the TextClock view, you can call its setTimeZone() method to change its time zone. So, add the following code inside the onClickGermany() method:

Similarly, add the following code inside the onClickIndia() method:

If you're wondering what R is, it's an auto-generated class that contains, among other things, the IDs of all the views you have in your layouts. The findViewById() method expects you to use this class while passing an ID to it.

At this point, you can press Shift + F10 again to re-run the app. You should now be able to click on the buttons to change the clock's time zone.

Conclusion

You just created your first fully functional, native app for Android! I encourage you to make a few changes to it. For instance, you could try using other time formats or time zones. You could also try changing the positions of the buttons and the clock view.

There are dozens of views and view groups you can use to create your apps. Do refer to the official documentation to learn about them.

CodeCanyon is one of the largest online marketplaces for Ionic templates. No matter what your app's requirements are, there's a good chance that CodeCanyon has one that will help give your project a boost!

Ionic App Templates from CodeCanyon

Ionic templates work similarly to front-end themes and templates for platforms like WordPress. They consist of a collection of files and assets that help to bridge the gap between the framework itself and the finished product that you are building.

There are a ton of benefits to using an Ionic app template, namely:

  • starting with a large portion of your project already completed
  • documented, professional code
  • reduced project cost
  • an existing structure to build the remainder of your project on

Pairing these benefits with the already powerful framework provided by Ionic gives developers a huge leg up when it comes to app development. Small development teams and those with limited resources will find them especially helpful. Purchasing your premium theme on CodeCanyon can give you all of these benefits, and in some cases, you may even be able to purchase extended support.

The templates covered here are just a small sample of the hundreds of Ionic app templates we have available at CodeCanyon. With so many app templates in existence, you’re sure to find one that’s helpful, no matter how niche your project. So check them out!
